Residency Information

Are you considering moving to the Bay Islands on a full or part time
basis?   Current Immigration law requires non-residents from the
United States to renew their Visa every thirty days and exit the country
for three days every ninety days.  This can become quite expensive if
you're planning on staying here for a while.
You can save yourself the inconvenience and expense by applying for
Honduran residency.  Click on the Residency Information link above
for more details.

          The Bay Islands of Honduras

There are three primary islands that make up the Bay Islands of
Honduras; Roatan, Guanaja and Utila.  They are the best investment
opportunity in the Caribbean; comparable property elsewhere costing
two to three times as much, if not more.   The islands are located
about thirty miles north of the north coast of mainland Honduras in
the Caribbean.  The primary industries are fishing and tourism,
although the shrimp and lobster business is falling off due to
competition from shrimp farms and the high cost of fuel.

There are direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Newark and
Milan Italy on the weekends that bring in fifteen hundred to two
thousand folks.  There are local flights to and from the mainland
every day during the week connecting with Continental, Delta,
American, and other international carriers from San Pedro Sula and
Tegucigalpa (the capital).  The mainland is easily accessible from the
islands for shopping trips, ecotours, visiting the Mayan ruins at
Copan, and a large variety of other attractions and activities.  Plus,
some of the finest cigars in the world are produced in Danli or Santa
Rosa de Copan on the mainland.

The growth of the tourism and retirement community activity on
Roatan has been phenomenal over the last couple of years; we get
thirty to forty cruise ships a month in the winter and spring months
and Carnival Corporation  recently committed $48 million to build a
new cruise ship facility in Dixon Cove in addition to the existing
facility in Coxen Hole.  And there are numerous projects being
developed to cater to the retirement community and to folks that want
to live on an island in the Caribbean.

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands.  It's infrastructure is being
built up rapidly and is the most advanced of the three islands.  The
implementation of the new 'Free Tourist Zone' legislation recently
enacted will provide the administration and funding required to
improve it even more rapidly with a focus on the roads, power grid
and health and security facilities and systems.

The island was 'discovered' about twenty-five years ago and growth
has been slow until the beginning of this century. It is roughly
thirty-five miles long and four miles wide and is completely
surrounded by a coral reef that make scuba diving and snorkeling
excellent and the fishing is very good.

The west end of the island is the most popular and gets the majority
of the tourist trade as well as providing the majority of the
restaurants, shops and night life.  Most of the property on the west
end of the island has turned over at least once in past several years
and is now being sold as individual lots or developed with
condominiums, town homes, or single family dwellings.

The area of the island around French Harbor has recently begun to
build up and an 18 hole golf course project is in the works.  The
activity on the east end has been slower to develop.  However, there
are some lovely projects that are starting to be developed there.

The population of Roatan is about fifty thousand.  Electricity is
supplied by a local power company to most areas of the island.
Water is provided by local 'community' systems, wells, or rain water
collection systems.  Coxen Hole and French Harbor have public
sewage systems; individual homes and development projects need to
install their own  septic systems.

The island is a great place for people looking for investment
opportunities as well as full time, partial time or vacation residence
on a Caribbean island.  Come and visit us soon.
